Why not give your best collectors every account?
Because your best collectors run out of hours, and "best" is an average that hides specialists. Ranking collectors and giving the top ones first pick helps, but it has a ceiling: the top few get accounts anyone competent would close, while the accounts that needed a particular collector go to whoever is next.

Your best collectors run out of hours
A top collector can only work so many accounts a day. Send everything good to the top of the leaderboard and the rest still goes to whoever is next. Rank-based routing improves the first few accounts and leaves the bulk of the floor where it was.
"Best" is an average
Split the floor by type of account and the order changes. A collector who looks middling overall can be your strongest on aged, low-balance accounts. Route by rank and that collector gets spent on accounts anyone competent would have closed, while the accounts that needed that collector go elsewhere. Why collectors convert differently.
Work at the level of the pair
Predictive pairing asks which accounts each collector does best with, judged from your own history, and sends each one to that collector inside the group your routing already chose. With a prediction for every collector and every account, it picks the best set of pairs within each collector’s capacity, so work spreads across the floor instead of piling onto the top few.
It cannot be gamed by cherry-picking
When BestPair is measured, accounts are split at random, so easy ones land in the control group at the same rate. The extra cannot come from giving your best collectors the easy work. How a routing change is measured.
Common follow-up questions
Is matching fair on commission?
Matching is not a leaderboard. Each account goes to the eligible collector who has done best with accounts like it, so work spreads across the floor rather than piling onto a few people. Your commission plan stays yours.
